The following unit allows students to gain an in-depth look at the White House – its structure, role, and history - based on the content featured in C-SPAN’s original production, The White House: Inside America’s Most Famous Home, programs featured throughout C-SPAN’s White House Week, and on C-SPAN’s White House website.

Teachers can record the following programs that will air during C-SPAN’s White House Week, or view them streamed at www.c-span.org/videoarchives to show in your classroom:

  • C-SPAN’s documentary, The White House: Inside America’s Most Famous Home - airs 12/14/08, at 9 pm ET & PT (105 minutes)
  • White House Tours by Presidents and First Ladies - airs 12/15/08, at 9 pm ET
  • Behind the Scenes: The Working White House - airs 12/16/08, at 9 pm ET
  • The White House Gardens & Grounds - airs 12/17/08, at 9 pm ET
  • The Lincoln White House - airs 12/18/08 at 9 pm ET
  • Interviews with President and Mrs. Bush - airs 12/20/08 at 9 pm ET
For more information on C-SPAN’s White House Week, visit C-SPAN’s White House website.

For traditional 45-minute classes:

  • Two-weeks to teach the entire unit

For 90-minute block classes:

  • One-week to teach the entire unit

NOTE: Since the unit’s lessons - with the exception of the first three - do not build on one another, teachers can opt to pick and choose specific lessons they would like to teach and/or switch the order of the lessons that appear in the unit layout.

Each lesson in the White House unit highlights a specific theme addressed in C-SPAN’s documentary, White House Week programs, and/or White House website.

The unit includes a culminating assessment designed to help students synthesize content covered throughout the unit, and can be completed during extra class time or as a homework assignment since outside research and writing is required.
