Emperor Akihito, in his first public statement since Japan's March 11, 2011, earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster, expressed his condolences to the Japanese people from the Imperial Palace. In his remarks he said the death toll continues to rise and addressed concerns about nuclear power plants. He further said that the government was working hard and expressed gratitude to emergency workers.
