University of Virginia History professor Elizabeth Varon taught a lecture course in the fall of 2010 on the “Rise and Fall of the Slave South.” In this day’s lecture, she focused on the Fugitive Slave Law and the Sectional Crisis, covering the rising sectional tensions of the 1850s with an emphasis on the Underground Railroad’s role in combating the new 1850 federal slave-catching law.
