STUDENT ACTIVITY

Review the date of your state's primary or caucus. Does your primary or caucus fall on February 5, 2008? This is known as “Super Tuesday” because there are numerous primaries on this date. If your state participates in a primary election, is it closed or open?

Prior to your own state’s primary election, take a straw poll of you class or school preference on the candidates running in the primary. Compare your own class predictions with the polling information compiled by local and state media.

Discuss together or use as writing prompts:
  • Why might a candidate drop out of the race? When should that decision be made?
  • Which dates on the primary election/caucus chart seem to be the most important? Why?
  • Which candidates' campaigns gained or lost momentum? Why?
  • Did the actual outcome of the election conform with the state and local polls? Did it conform with your class or school polling? Why or why not?
  • Do you think there should be so much emphasis put on the results of the Iowa caucus or New Hampshire primary? Why or why not?
